The more powerful the binoculars, the more hand vibrations are magnified. As a result, even a slight shake of the hands will shake the image in the binoculars significantly. Image-shake quickly becomes intolerable, and you just can't follow the action.
At the stabilizer's heart are vertical and horizontal gyroscopes that detect motion in any direction. The amount of shake is instantly calculated by a microcomputer, and the movement is counteracted, either by a set of vari-angle prisms or a tilt mechanism. In effect, the light refraction is altered so the image always is viewable, even when hands are less than steady!
